Courage and Ego – two ingredients to be a writer

In my mind, it takes great courage and a healthy ego to be a writer.

I mean let’s look at this. You have to believe in yourself enough to think that people would be interested in reading whatever sprouts out of your head/hands/soul.

And then, you have to have the guts to put it in some format and let, no encourage, other people to read it.

What’s more, you have to have a sufficient amount of sense of self to tell the story bubbling up inside you. I think writers can’t help but write. I think we have to tell the tale, Or on some level it stays in our minds and makes us a little wonky in the head. And sometimes, it comes out convoluted. It feels and seems nonsensical. We end up needing either time or someone outside ourselves to help us navigate the twisty path of our own imaginations.

I think those fabulous people are the beta readers and the editors. You take the mountain of words and help us navigate it. You help straighten out the tangled thoughts and ideas and help us make them whole.

So, I wanted to reach out and thank all of you who have the guts and the ego to put words to page. And I also want to express my gratitude to those of you who take on a writer’s sometimes cacophony of words and help us make sense of them.

Writing is an act of courage. Editing is an act of healing.

Thank you.
